Breast cancer is diagnosed with imaging and a biopsy, then characterised by type, stage and biomarkers such as ER, PR and HER2.
Treatment usually combines surgery with systemic therapy and, in some cases, radiation, planned together by a multidisciplinary team. The right plan depends on the individual case.
Understanding cancer type
Breast cancer is not a single disease. Categories a clinical team considers include DCIS (non-invasive), early invasive breast cancer, hormone-receptor-positive disease, HER2-positive disease, triple-negative breast cancer, and metastatic disease.
