Surgical and Oncologic Outcomes of Robotic and Conventional Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy With Immediate Reconstruction

The authors pooled international data to compare robotic and conventional nipple-sparing mastectomy in a larger group.

How was the study performed?

The analysis pooled data on 755 nipple-sparing mastectomy procedures in 659 women (609 with breast cancer and 50 undergoing risk-reducing mastectomy), all with immediate reconstruction.

Propensity-score matching was used to adjust for differences between the groups. Outcomes included 30-day complications, nipple necrosis, complication severity and early disease-free and overall survival.

What this may mean for patients

After propensity-score matching, the robotic group had a lower observed complication rate, and early oncologic outcomes did not differ significantly between the groups.

This adds larger comparative data to a field previously dominated by single-center reports.

Patients considering either approach should still discuss whether they are suitable candidates and what the trade-offs are.
